THE COMPANY
La Familia Green, conceived in Spring 2005 by painter/printmaker/entrepreneur Mollie Green and savvy husband Andrew Miners, represents an eclectic assortment of interests and ideas. The aesthetic is Mexican folk art meets Scandinavian design meets wildlife preserve … West Texas meets the Midwest. Colorful stationery and clever, hand-bound journals make up the family.
Repurposed VHS boxes, classic album sleeves and mailed, vintage postcards serve as journal covers. All paper goods are either graciously Gocco printed or crafted from hand- cut and collaged paper. We like to emphasize that all offerings from La Familia Green are produced in small quantities by hand. This ensures that you will send a card or give a gift that is unique—each piece a little work of art.
The ever-evolving collection is inspired by our growing list of obsessions—high-top sneakers, the style of Alexander Girard, fluorescent pink, floaty pens, comic books, thrift-store owl collections, 1970s tennis manuals, dioramas, the sky in New Mexico, Scandinavian textiles…
From La Familia Green (which also includes cats Shaky Tail, Mr. Paws, and Lemur, Stickers the dog, and the memory of our beloved ferret, Jasper) in Chicago—buy a card and spread the love.
THE ARTIST
Stationery designer Mollie Green grew up among the tumbleweeds and cotton fields of Lubbock, Texas. Her childhood was filled with games of hide-and-seek in her family’s furniture store, itchy lacey dresses that her mother made for her, and her grandmother’s Quimper collection.
After moving to the Midwest in high school, Mollie completed a BFA in painting and printmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Graduation forced the lesson of how to live and work as an artist—that meant retail by day, artist by night. Attempting to integrate retail skills with artistic training and a love of multiples led to the birth of La Familia Green in 2005.
“I wanted to make stationery and journals that were completely handmade and special yet accessible. I love the immediacy and intimacy of cards. You buy a card, write a note and send it out into the world. I never know how many people will experience—hold, use, enjoy—my work. I also love that I can easily and quickly express my interests through this medium.”
Mollie has filled the La Familia Green studio in Chicago with things that inspire her—good music, plastic Mexican wrestlers, colorful ribbon, Czech finger puppets, back issues of Seventeen, vintage wildlife encyclopedias and her ferret Jasper Johns.
“I love to brainstorm with my husband Andrew (a great journal maker and card packager and the force behind anything computer related) and friends I have met in the stationery world. In the future I hope to continue expanding the line—always making everything by hand.”
THE RESPONSIBILITY
La Familia Green strives everyday to make environmentally-friendly
choices and to reduce energy and waste. We only use paper and
envelopes that are 30-100% post consumer recycled. We support vendors
that minimize their environmental impact. Our clear sleeves are
biodegradeable, sustainable and compostable. And we are big advocates
of reuse---from shipping boxes and packing material to discarded
magazines that we use to line envelopes. We also only buy products
(like the soap at the sink) that have not been tested on animals. And La Familia Green uses a percentage of all sales to support local no-kill animal shelters.
